Little Joy in Chesterfield: Midlothian Library + Urban Farmhouse

Hi, we’re Erin and Natalie and we are finding Little Joys RVA! We are exploring Richmond and its surrounding areas to uncover cozy, kid-friendly spots where moms can actually feel comfortable, recharge, and savor the little joys all around us—while celebrating the small businesses that make our community special.

Every mom deserves a spot where kids are welcome, the atmosphere feels uplifting, and you can actually take a breath. In Midlothian, we found a duo that makes it easy to do just that—whether you’re solo, with a baby or toddler in tow, or supporting your tweens and teens.

Midlothian Library

The newly renovated Midlothian Library feels like it was designed with families in mind. Sunlight fills the space, making it both calming and energizing. There are cute little reading nooks, tables and chairs lining the huge windows, plenty of seating options throughout, and private areas that could be great for breastfeeding. The children’s area is bright and playful, with toys and space to roam, giving little ones room to explore while moms relax nearby.

There is also a family bathroom conveniently located near the kid section.

One of the highlights is the outdoor classroom, which is completely enclosed and safe for toddlers to run and play. Kids love the natural play items, like artificial rocks on a spinning beam, a music station, and a little area with benches surrounding turf perfect for a picnic or circle reading. The library even lets you borrow a sheet if you didn’t bring your own, making it super easy to enjoy an outdoor snack or storytime. There’s also a fun bear hunt path with pawprints that toddlers adore following, adding a little extra adventure to every visit.

For older kids, there are modern study rooms, a green screen room, and cozy seating areas perfect for homework, projects, or quiet reading. It’s a space that works for every stage, from babies to teens.

Urban Farmhouse

Right across the parking lot is Urban Farmhouse, a cozy café full of natural light and friendly faces. The menu offers fresh and gluten-free options, plus coffee, teas, and baked treats. Kids are always welcome here, and the open layout—with a breezy patio on nice days—makes it easy to settle in whether you’re catching up with a friend, wrangling a toddler, or taking a moment for yourself. Local art, handmade goods, and books add extra charm, making this café a true neighborhood gem.

Make It a Mom Date

Together, these two spots are perfect for a morning out. Start at the library for playtime, storytime, or study, then stroll across for a snack and coffee. Or flip it around—grab a latte first, then head to the library for some kid-free time or a fun afternoon of learning.

With walkable access, plenty of parking, and a welcoming vibe, this little corner of Midlothian is a place to recharge, connect with your kids, and maybe even meet your next mom friend.
